Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Responds to Trump's Warning to Relocate World Cup Matches from City

The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, suggested that the city was prepared for a face-off with President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, located 22 miles southwest of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a local podcast this week to respond to comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."

A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even the president, can undo it.

Wu added, "We live in a time where for drama, for control, to test limits ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."

Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." She finished by stressing her commitment for the city, saying, "Ten toes down for our city."

The President's Comments and FIFA Role

Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also visited the White House and presented World Cup tournament and club championship awards to Trump as presents.

On Tuesday, Trump was questioned on recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police vehicle being set on fire. Trump replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the president of FIFA, who's great."

Trump added, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Threats and Upcoming Tournament Details

President Trump has made previous comments that he would have the similar discussion with the FIFA president about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 locations across North America.

The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The 48-team event is planned to be held from 11 June to July 19 in the coming year.
